Dynamic Island for the Mac you already have
Short answer. As of October 15, 2026, Apple hasn't announced a Mac with a Dynamic Island. According to Bloomberg, one is coming around October 27: a new OLED MacBook Pro, not a macOS update. Every report says notched Macs won't get Apple's island. You can turn your notch into an island today with a third-party app: free ones (Boring Notch, Atoll, Notchy), paid all-rounders (NotchNook, Alcove, MacNotch and more) and agent-focused ones (Vibe Island). Below: what we know about Apple's island, a comparison of the apps with prices, and where SparkU fits in.
What the Dynamic Island is
The Dynamic Island arrived with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022. It's the black pill around the front camera that changes shape with whatever your phone is doing: a timer, the song that's playing, a call, a ride on its way. Apps put their live status there through Live Activities.
Macs don't have an Apple island yet. They have a notch: the black cutout with the camera at the top of the screen on every MacBook Pro since 2021 and every MacBook Air since 2022. macOS barely uses it — the menu bar runs on either side, and the space under the notch stays empty. That's the space third-party islands fill.
What we know about Apple's Dynamic Island for Mac
Everything below is reporting, not an Apple announcement. The main source is Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, who has called most recent Macs correctly ahead of time.
| What | What's reported | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Which Mac | A redesigned 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro with an OLED touch screen and a hole-punch camera instead of a notch, with an island around it | rumor, Bloomberg, Feb 2026 |
| When | Unveiled around October 27, 2026 via press release and press hands-ons, no livestream. On sale in November | rumor, Bloomberg, Oct 8 and 13, 2026 |
| Chip | M5 Pro and M5 Max | rumor, Bloomberg, Oct 2026 |
| Price | More than today's MacBook Pro (currently from $2,499 for the 14″ M5 Pro). Nobody has a credible figure | rumor |
| Name | "MacBook Ultra" shows up in coverage but isn't confirmed | rumor |
| What the island does | Expands based on the app or Mac feature you're using. No details yet | rumor, Bloomberg |
| Can third-party apps use it | Unknown. Apple's docs currently list Live Activities for iPhone, iPad and Mac Catalyst apps, but not for regular Mac apps | fact: Apple documentation |
What already exists officially: in macOS 26 Tahoe, your Mac shows Live Activities from a nearby iPhone in the menu bar — a delivery, a ride, a game score. Clicking one opens it in iPhone Mirroring. It's a mirror of the phone; Mac apps can't post their own Live Activities this way.
Will notched MacBooks get the island?
Very likely not. We put the chance at 10% or less through the end of 2027. Here's why:
- No report mentions an island for existing Macs. They all tie it to new hardware: the island needs an OLED screen with pixels lit right up to the camera.
- The iPhone has had the island since 2022, and no notched iPhone ever got it. In 2025 Apple even released a brand-new iPhone 16e with a notch and no island.
- The regular M6 MacBook Pro keeps the notch, according to the same Bloomberg reporting. Gurman and Kuo both expect the MacBook Air to move to OLED no earlier than 2028.
- macOS 27 did nothing new with the notch beyond a "»" button for menu bar icons hidden behind it.
Which Macs have a notch
- MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″ — every model since October 2021: M1 Pro and M1 Max, M2, M3, M4, M5.
- MacBook Air 13″ with M2, M3, M4 and M5; every MacBook Air 15″.
- No notch: MacBook Air M1, the 13″ MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, MacBook Neo (2026), iMac and external displays. Most apps below draw the island at the top edge of the screen on these.

For AI agents
| App | Price | Strengths | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vibe Island | $19.99 one-time (early-bird price), one year of updates | 30 agents: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, OpenCode and more. Approve requests and reply right from the island | Agents only: no music, files or calls |
| SparkU | One-time purchase, price not announced yet | Agents plus an island for the whole day — details below | Launching spring 2027, in beta now |
How SparkU is different
SparkU is ours, so let's start with what it doesn't do.
Where we fall short:
- SparkU isn't out yet. It launches in spring 2027; the beta is live now and invites go out in waves.
- We haven't announced the price. All we can say is that it's a one-time purchase, no subscription.
- Fewer agents than Vibe Island: Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Antigravity and Hermes, versus thirty.
- It's closed source. If you want open source, go with Boring Notch or Atoll.
What only we do — or almost only we do:
- Answer your agent without opening the terminal. The agent's question, a plan to approve, a permission request — they show up in the island, and you reply from there. And the island stays useful all day, not just while an agent is running.
- Discord. See who's talking in a voice channel, mute and deafen from any screen without switching to Discord. We didn't find this in any of the apps above.
- Real audio. The equalizer in the island listens to what's actually playing on your Mac instead of drawing random bars.
- An open API. The island has a local API and a
sparkucommand-line tool with documentation. Your own agent can write an integration for you. - Works without a notch. On a MacBook Neo, a MacBook Air M1 or an external display, the island sits at the top edge of the screen.
- English and Russian, in the app and in support.
Everything else is what you'd expect from an island: music with artwork, a file shelf with AirDrop, your calendar and next meeting, Pomodoro, CPU load and AirPods battery, a translator and a currency converter. Requirements: macOS 14.6 or later, Apple silicon and Intel.
How to choose
- You don't want to pay — Boring Notch or Notchy.
- You want looks and animation — Alcove.
- You want to tune everything and already use Setapp — MacNotch.
- You juggle many different AI agents and need nothing else up top — Vibe Island.
- You want agents, Discord and an all-day island in one app — join the SparkU beta.
What happens when the Mac with Apple's island ships
Apple's island will only be on the new high-end MacBook Pro. Every other notched Mac — tens of millions of them — will keep its notch for years. For those Macs, third-party islands remain the only option.
On a Mac with Apple's own island, a third-party app has no business sitting on top of the camera and the system pill. Our plan is a SparkU capsule next to Apple's island. We'll know exactly how that looks once we try it on real hardware — and we'll update this page when we do.
FAQ
Will my MacBook Air or MacBook Pro get a Dynamic Island? Not from Apple, most likely. No report mentions plans to bring the island to notched Macs. For now, the only way to get one is a third-party app.
When will Apple show a Mac with a Dynamic Island? Around October 27, 2026 according to Bloomberg, with sales starting in November. Apple hasn't confirmed the date.
Does the MacBook Neo have a Dynamic Island? The MacBook Neo has no notch, and Apple isn't making an island for it. NotchNook, MacNotch, Notchy, Seam, Vibe Island and SparkU can draw an island at the top edge of a Mac without a notch.
Are these apps safe to install? Check which permissions an app asks for and why. Islands typically need Accessibility to control other apps and system audio access to visualize music. It's a good sign when the developer explains every permission and when the app is notarized by Apple — then macOS opens it without extra warnings.
Is there a free option? Yes: Boring Notch and Atoll are open source, and Notchy is free with optional donations.
